Grrls' Day

Growing up in America's Middle West, it was great to learn that, far to the East, girls had their very own day, the 3d day of the 3d month. Japanese girls mark Hina-matsuri with displays of hina dolls and by setting sail to handmade paper dolls that carry away misfortunes. It is "celebrated because the parents want their children to grow strong and healthy."
It was not great, though, to learn that Boys' Day (5th day of the 5th month) was the preferred holiday. The latter appears to have become "Children's Day," yet boys are still preferred.
We reclaim March 3 as our own Grrls' Day of health and strength.
