...2006, the U.N. General Assembly voted 170-4 to establish a Human Rights Council to replace the decades-old Commission on Human Rights. The United States has declined to seek membership in the Council since its inception.
... 1961, apartheid South Africa withdrew from Britain's Commonwealth of Nations. The Canadian Broadcasting Co. reported that the move would permit South Africa to join "Portugal and Southern Rhodesia" in "a united front against African nationalism," and that this, in turn, might lead to "all-out race war" on the continent.
