On March 16 ...

... 1968, U.S. soldiers under the direct command of Lt. William L. Calley Jr. killed hundreds of unarmed women, children, and men at the Vietnam hamlet of My Lai. Calley would be the only person convicted of involvement in the massacre; though initially sentenced to life in prison, he was released in 1974.
... 1988, Iraqi officials attacked the Kurdish village of Halabja with poison gas. As many as 5,000 women, children, and men would be killed in what became known as the Anfal campaign.
