...1857, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Scott v. Sandford that U.S. citizenship did not extend to a slave, even one like Dred Scott, whose owner had died; therefore, Scott did not enjoy the privilege of litigation in U.S. courts. Only after the Civil War was the decision reversed, by means of the 14th amendment to the Constitution.
...1957 (50 years ago today), British colonialism ceded to the newly independent state of Ghana, with Dr. Kwame Nkrumah as prime minister.
