Pathfinders in robes

One of many commemorations today of International Women's Day, this one next to the Peace Palace at The Hague: "Women Ground -breakers in the First International Courts," sponsored by the Open Society Institute's Justice Initiative and its Network Women's Program. Honorees: Rosalyn Higgins, President of the International Court of Justice; Louise Arbour, U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights and former Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunals for Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia; Carla del Ponte, current Chief Prosecutor of the latter tribunal; Dorothee DeSampayo, the first woman Registrar of that tribunal; Judge Gabrielle Kirk McDonald, the former President of that tribunal, now on the Iran-U.S. Claims Tribunal; International Crimi -nal Court Judge Navanethem Pillay, the former President of the Rwanda tribunal; and Judge Elizabeth Odio Benito of the International Criminal Court, formerly Vice President of the Rwanda tribunal.
