In France pranksters surreptitiously tape paper fish on others and then shriek (with the same inexplicable glee that compels an American schoolchild to sneak "bunny ears" behind another's head) "Poisson d'avril!" So watch your back, and enjoy.
... 1940, Wangari Muta Maathai, the 1st woman in East and Central Africa to earn a Ph.D., founder of the Pan African Green Belt Network, and winner of the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize "for her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace," was born in Ihithe village, Tetu division, Nyeri District of Kenya.
... 1884, Florence Blanchfield, an American nurse who was the 1st woman to become a fully ranked officer of the U.S. Army, was born.
