On May 11, ....

...1894, Martha Graham was born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania. Though she did not see a dance performance until she was 17, she would become one of the 20th century's most influence dance choreographers in the subsequent 79 years of her life. A PBS special wrote that her global impact on dance "was staggering and often compared to that of Picasso's on painting, Stravinsky's on music, and Frank Lloyd Wright's on architecture." Hallmarks of Graham's work were expressive movements accented by costumes that stretched or swirled wildly around her and other dancers in her company.
