... 1981, a design by Maya Lin (right), a 21-year-old architecture student whose parents had emigrated from China in 1949, was chosen from among 1,421 proposals for a Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The V-shaped black granite slabs, on which are inscribed the names of 58,000 U.S. servicemembers killed in the conflict, now stands on the Mall in Washington, D.C.
... 1945, Maine-born Mildred Gillars made her last Nazi propaganda broadcast for Radio Berlin. In 1949 the woman who had referred to herself as "Midge at the mike" -- but was better known as "Axis Sally" -- was convicted by a federal jury of 1 count of treason. She served 12 years in prison.
