... 1979, in Nicaragua, Sandinista rebels established a government, having overthrown the U.S.-backed government of President Anastasio Somoza Debayle, who'd sought refuge in the United States a few days earlier. The Sandinistas would hold power for a decade marked by armed opposition from U.S.-aided Contras.
