When her parents forbade her to go to university, she became a social worker and women's suffragist, and eventually joined England's Women's Social and Political Union. She provided essential financial support to writers Ezra Pound, an editor of her periodical The Egoist, and James Joyce, whose A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Ulysses 1st appeared in serial form in that periodical.
