... 1995, the Appeals Chamber of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia issued a landmark ruling establishing its jurisdiction to adjudicate cases brought against individuals alleged to have committed genocide, crimes against humanity, or war crimes in the course of the armed conflict in the Balkans, pursuant to the ICTY Statute that the U.N. Security Council had adopted in 1993. The decision came in the case of the 1st defendant haled before the tribunal, Prosecutor v. Tadić.
... 1952 (55 years ago today), the Honourable Madam Justice Marie Deschamps (left), of the Canadian Supreme Court, was born in Repentigny, Québec. In private practice between 1975 and 1990, when she was appointed to the Quebec Superior Court in Montréal, Deschamps has served on the high court since August 7, 2002.
