.... 1932 (75 years ago today), Iraq was admitted into the League of Nations as an independent state, thus ending a decades-old British mandate in that Middle Eastern country. The reign of King Faysal was short-lived, and unrest persisted.
... 1948, U.S. Rep. Allyson Y. Schwartz (D-Pa.) was born in New York City.
... 1990, at midnight, a replica of the American Liberty Bell tolled at Berlin's Town Hall (above). The 45-year-old German Democratic Republic ceased to exist, and east and west joined together into a reunified Federal Republic of Germany, "a state of 78 million souls and 137,900 square miles."
