... 1998, Protocol No. 11 to Europe's Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms entered into force. It established the European Court of Human Rights, headquartered in Strasbourg, France, in the building at right, as a unitary adjudicatory body. The protocol replaced a two-tier Court-and-Commission structure.
... 1952 (55 years ago today), the United States detonated the world's 1st hydrogen bomb at at Eniwetok atoll in the Marshall Islands. Though unofficial reports surfaced soon after, official confirmation of the "super-atomic" blast, from the Atomic Energy Commission, did not come for another 2 weeks.
