On January 1, ...

... 1908 (100 years ago today), hundreds of thousands of revelers celebrated the New Year just after the 1st lighted-ball-drop from the New York Times' tower at Times Square. ... 1947, the Canadian Citizenship Act came into effect. By this act persons in the northernmost American country attained the status of citizens for the 1st time. A local newspaper enthused: "[T]here are no more Irish-Canadians, French Canadians, Ukrainian Canadians, German Canadians. They are now just plain Canadians—12,000,000 of them."
