On this day

On March 19, ...
... 2003 (5 years ago today), an event of particular moment occurred in the Arab world. We refer not to the invasion of Iraq, discussed in last year's "On this day" and today in a post above, but rather to the acceptance by the man known both as Abu Mazen and Mahmoud Abbas of the nomination to become Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority. Yesterday, a day after talks resumed between foreign ministers for Palestine (flag above) and Israel, United Press International wrote of Abbas, now the Palestinian Authority's President, that he "reportedly will break off peace talks with Israel, unless Israel comes through with concessions by April."
... 1990, the 1st world tournament for women in the sport of ice hockey was held in Ottawa, Canada. "Canada beats the USA 5-2 in the Gold medal final."
