On December 11

On this day in ...

... 1913 (95 years ago today), in Florence, Italy, police arrested a museum worker for the theft of the Mona Lisa (right) 2 years earlier. The Italian-born man had been an employee at the Louvre in Paris when he stole Leonardo da Vinci's Renaissance masterpiece, 1 of the most famous, and enigmatic, portraits of all time. The arrest came about after the thief tried to sell the work to an art dealer. The painting remains on display at the Louvre to this day, albeit with far more security than before.

... 1973 (35 years ago today), representatives of the Federal Republic of Germany and Czechoslovakia signed the Treaty of Prague. In it the 2 countries: declared null and void the Munich Pact of 1938; acknowledged the inviolability of their borders; and entered diplomatic relations.
