On this day in ...

... 1990, Marlene Dietrich, then 88 years old, was awarded the French medal, the Légion d'honneur. Though born in Berlin, the actor-singer had left Germany for Hollywood in 1930. During World War II Dietrich (near left) spoke out against Nazism and anti-Semitism, sold war bonds, and performed at USO shows for Allied troops. (photo credit)

... 1839 (170 years ago today), photographic pioneer Louis Daguerre made the 1st photo of the moon. At right is a daguerrotype image of the same celestial body, made 6 years later in the United States. (photo credit)
