... 1980, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (logo at left) was opened for signature, ratification and accession at U.N. headquarters in New York. The treaty known as CEDAW entered into force on September 3, 1981, and today has 185 states parties, the United States not among them.
... 1958, U.S. Rep. Debbie Halvorson (D-Ill.) (right), who'd who served as Illinois' 1st woman State Senate Majority Leader before her election to Congress last November, was born in Chicago Heights, Illinois.
