On this day in ...

... 2002, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security unveiled a color-coded system for terror warnings, with green being the most "Low" level, red the most "Severe." Though DHS has seen Secretaries come and go since then, the system still may be found on the department's website, even now that new Secretary Janet Napolitano is in charge.

... 1868, the British High Commissioner in South Africa declared the land ruled by Moeshoeshoe I "Basutoland," and claimed it as a British colony. Today the territory comprises the independent nation-state of Lesotho (flag at left).
