On September 7

On this day in ...
... 1859 (150 years ago today), beside the Thames in London, England, the Clock Tower at the Houses of Parliament, known as Big Ben, rang quarter-hour chimes for the 1st time. The clock itself had begun keeping time 4 months earlier.
