On February 12

On this day in ...
... 2010 (today), is marked once again the International Day against the Use of Child Soldiers, declared to commemorate the entry into force on this date in 2002 a multilateral treaty that bans states and rebel groups from recruiting children under 18 as soldiers. This Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the involvement of children in armed conflict has 131 states parties -- among them a nonparty to the principal Children's Convention, the United States. Nongovernmental organizations that work to stop child-soldiering have dubbed today Red Hand Day (logo at left).
