On March 10

On this day in ...
... 1905, the Amanns, an American couple living in Pirmasens, not far from Germany's border with France, gave birth to a daughter they named Philippine. The girl grew up in the United States. But in the late 1920s she returned to Germany, where, using the stage name Betty Amann (left), she launched a career acting in silent films. Among her most noted work was her portrayal, excerpted in the video below, of a Jazz Age jewel thief in the 1929 silent Asphalt. Amann worked with director Alfred Hitchcock in a 1931 film, then left Europe for the United States as Nazism took over in Germany. Honored many decades later with Germany's highest movie award, the Filmband in Gold, she died in 1990, at age 85, in Westport, Connecticut.
