On May 25

On this day in ...
... 1875 (135 years ago today), Gracie Annie Lockhart became the 1st woman in the British Empire to earn a university degree. Lockhart (left), then 20 years old, was graduated with a bachelor's degree from Mount Allison University, Sackville, New Brunswick, which in 1854 had opened the 1st and only college for women in Canada. She'd go on to be a schoolteacher and the wife of a Methodist minister. Her milestone contribution? Her

academic achievement as a student provided clear evidence of the justice of women's claim to full rights in the field of higher education.
