... 1960 (50 years ago today), the United States' Food and Drug Administration approved use of the birth control pill. A recent Time article on the "revolution" that the decision to permit sale of this inexpensive form of contraception spawned stated:
Arriving at a moment of social and political upheaval, the Pill became a handy proxy for wider trends: the rejection of tradition, the challenge to institutions, the redefinition of women's roles.
