On January 21

On this day in ...

... 2001 (10 years ago today), in Senegal, Jutta Kleinschmidt (right), a 38-year-old German, became the 1st woman to win the Paris-Dakar road rally (below left). She beat her male teammate, a Japanese national; the previous year's winner, a Frenchman, came in 3d. (She remains the only woman to have won the event.) Kleinschmidt, who holds a master's degree in physics, took up the sport in 1987.

(Prior January 21 posts are here, here, and here.)
