On this day in ...
... 1906 (105 years ago today), shortly after 5 in the morning, "a terrific earthquake shock shook" the City of San Francisco "and surrounding country" for as long as a minute. Thousands of people died from the quake -- "one of the most significant earthquakes of all time" -- and the fires that it touched off.
