On May 18

On this day in ...
... 1974, India made its 1st nuclear test, which it described "as a 'peaceful nuclear explosion.'" The underground test, at Pokhran, a municipality in the Indian state of Rajasthan, left the crater at left, which had "a radius variously reported at between 47 and 75 meters, and a depth of about 10 meters." Codename of the test: Smiling Buddha.
