On May 5

On this day in ...
... 1991 (20 years ago today), as the result of a 1987 Netherlands conference of the International Confederation of Midwives, a day to recognize and honor these health-care-givers -- called, naturally enough, International Midwives Day -- was celebrated for the 1st time. It's now observed in more than 50 countries around the world, as well as in the World Health Organization. As reflected in the 2011 poster at left, this year the Confederation looks forward to its conference in June in Durban, South Africa.
