On this day in ...
... 1991 (20 years ago today), South Africa repealed a statute that classified all births by race. This nullification of the 1950 Population Registration Act followed similar nullifications of laws that had prevented blacks from owning land and that segregated certain neighborhoods. The following month, President George H.W. Bush announced that that on account of these reforms, United States would end sanctions imposed against South Africa's apartheid regime.
