On June 21

On this day in ...
... 1957, Ellen Louks Fairclough, who'd been an account before entering public service, was sworn in as Canada's 1st woman Cabinet minister. Three years later, while she was responsible for Indian Affairs, many Aboriginal Canadians won the right to vote. During her political career Fairclough "was also elected to the House of Commons five times, a record unmatched by any other woman during the 1950s and 1960s." (credit for postage stamp honoring Fairclough)
