On June 23

On this day in ...
...1887, the Rocky Mountains Park Act became law in Canada. By this statute, land near hot springs in Banff, Alberta, that had been set aside as a reserve became the 1st national park in Canada -- and the 2d in North America, the United States having established Yellowstone National Park in 1872. Today, Banff National Park "encompasses 6,641 square kilometres (2,564 sq mi) of mountainous terrain, with numerous glaciers and ice fields, dense coniferous forest, and alpine landscapes."
