On this day in ...
... 1952, the International Court of Justice issued its judgment in Anglo-Iranian Oil Co. (United Kingdom v. Iran), in which Britain contended that Iran's 1951 nationalization of oil violated a 1933 lease agreement between the Iranian government and the British corporation now known as BP. (credit for 1925-1964 state flag of Iran) The ICJ ruled that it lacked jurisdiction to hear the merits of the matter.
