On July 31

On this day in ...
... 1942, a new order-in-council authorized the entry of Canadian women into the navy. The 7,000 women in the branch known formally as the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service -- and informally, on account of its acronym, as the "Wrens" -- aided Canada's efforts during World War II.
