On this day in ...
... 1875, was ratified Treaty of Saint Petersburg (right), which imperial officials of Japan and Russia had signed on May 7 of the same year. (photo credit) By its terms the pact allotted Sakhalin Island to Russia and gave to Japan sovereignty of the Kuril Islands. The demarcation was intended to ease tensions, respecting occupation and fishing rights, between residents of the 2 countries.
