On August 5

On this day in ...
... 1960, Burkina Faso won independence more than 60 years after the French arrived and claimed the West African territory as its colony. Known for a period as Upper Volta, today Burkina Faso -- capital Ouagadougou -- is a landlocked country, about the size of the state of Colorado, with a population of 16.3 million people comprising more than 60 ethnic groups.
