On September 15

On this day in ...
... 1971 (40 years ago today), a dozen members of the Don't Make a Wave Committee chartered the Phyllis Cormack, a small halibut vessel, from Canada's Vancouver Island to the Aleutian Island of Amchitka, in Alaska, in order to protest the United States' underground testing of a 5.2-megaton nuclear bomb. Renamed Greenpeace on this day, the nongovernmental organization continues to work against nuclear weapons and other activities that harm the world's oceans. (Prior posts) (logo credit)
