On September 12

On this day in ...
... 2006 (5 years ago today), the 61st session of the United Nations' all-members body opened with Haya Rashad Al-Khalifa of Bahrain installed as President of the U.N. General Assembly. She thus became the 1st woman since 1969 and the 1st Bahraini ever to hold the one-year position. (photo credit) Women preceding Shaikha Haya (left), a former ambassador known as a "women's rights advocate and pioneering lawyer in Bahrain," were Angie Brooks, a Liberian who served from 1969 to 1970, and Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit of India (prior post) from 1953 to 1954.
