On September 23

On this day in ...
... 1956 (55 years ago today), France and Britain asked for a U.N. Security Council meeting regarding the crisis in the Suez Canal (left). (photo credit) The move followed the two-month-old announcement that Egypt would nationalize the canal and use monies collected from ships passing through to build the Aswan Dam. (prior post) The Council would meet within days, but the crisis would continue through the year.
