On October 18

On this day in ...
... 1956 (55 years ago today), Isabelle Autissier was born in Paris, France. She began sailing in a family vessel at age 6, studied agronomy (majoring in aquaculture), and went on to become a competitive marathon yacht racer. She's credited as the 1st woman to have completed a solo world navigation in competition. (credit for image of cover of her book on that 1991 achievement) Her awards include Yachtwoman of the Year and the Legion of Honor.

(Prior October 18 posts are here, here, here, and here.)
