On October 21

On this day in ...
... 1986 (25 years ago today), the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights entered into force, having been been adopted 5 years earlier at a meeting of the Organization of African Unity in Banjul, Gambia. Today it's a basic legal text of the OAU's successor regional organization, the African Union. Charged with enforcing the treaty's terms are both the Banjul-based the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights and the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights (logo at left), based in Arusha, Tanzania.
