On November 4

On this day in ...
... 1982, in Toronto, the Ontario Supreme Court issued the 1st order of extradition against a Canadian citizen alleged to have committed war crimes. A Canadian Broadcasting Co. program on the order, which aired on this day, may be seen here. To be transferred to West Germany was Helmut Rauca, a former SS master sergeant said to have been involved in the murder of more than 11,000 Lithuanian Jews during World War II. Extradition of Rauca, who had immigrated to Canada in 1950, would take place in May 1983; several months later, Rauca would die before his trial could commence.
