On December 20

On this day in ...
... 2006 (5 years ago today), having won Senate confirmation earlier in the month, Margaret A. Ryan (right) was sworn in as the 2d woman ever to serve as a Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals of the Armed Forces, the 2d woman to hold that post. (photo credit) Ryan's a summa graduate of Notre Dame Law and a former law clerk to a federal appellate judge and, in October Term 2001, to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. Ryan served on active duty for the U.S. Marine Corps from 1988 to 1992, and again, as a judge advocate, from 1995 to 1999, and had served as aide de camp for the Marine Commandant. Ryan is due to serve as a CAAF judge until 2021.
