On January 14

On this day in ...
... 1967 (45 years ago today), at the Polo Field in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, tens of thousands of persons joined in what an organized described as a "Gathering of the Tribes in a 'union of love and activism,'" at which Hells Angels stood guard while bands played, poets chanted, and "Tim Leary told everyone to Turn on, Tune in and Dropout." As described in a 2007 PBS program, the event was called "a Be-In -- a clever reference to the successful sit in protests of the civil rights movement." The Summer of Love was just months away.

(Prior January 14 posts are here, here, and here, and here.)
