Pleased to note that the University of Maine School of Law in Portland will launch an annual Justice for Women Lecture this year.
Scheduled to deliver the inaugural lecture on March 27, 2012, is Unity Dow (below right), who from 1996 to 2009 served as a Judge on Botswana's High Court, the 1st woman to hold that position. Dow's other achievements include service as a Justice of the Interim Independent Constitutional Dispute Resolution Court of Kenya and as a Commissioner and Chair of the Executive Committee of the International Commission of Jurists. She's been a visiting professor at Columbia Law School, and cofounded the AIDS Action Trust and the Women and Law in Southern Africa Research Project.well known novelist. As a novelist, Dow has "concentrate[d] on gender and cultural identity and justice and power."
