On February 13

On this day in ...
... 1912 (100 years ago today), the Qing family having abdicated the imperial throne in the name of the 6-year-old boy who held it (Puyi, known to film buffs as "The Last Emperor"), the Republic of China took form on this day when President Yuan Shikai took office and, at the urging of Sun Yatsen, was endorsed by the Republican National Council. (credit for national flag used 1912-28) Extending recognition were the United States and Mexico on this day, but no other countries.

(Prior February 13 posts are here, here, here, and here.)
