On this day in ...
... 1717 (295 years ago today), theater-goers were treated to the 1st ballet ever to be performed in England. Described by its author as "Dramatick Entertainment of Dancing Attempted in Imitation of the Pantomimes of the Ancient Greeks and Romans," and titled "The Loves of Mars and Venus," the ballet made its début at the Theatre Royal (left), Drury Lane, London.
