On March 4

On this day in ...
... 1797 (215 years ago today), at the House of Representatives chamber in Congress Hall, Philadelphia, then the capital of the United States of America, Chief Justice Oliver Ellsworth issued the oath of office to John Adams, who thus succeeded George Washington as U.S. President. (image credit) Adams delivered a 2,318-word inaugural address. The event marked "the first ever peaceful transfer of power between elected leaders in modern times."
