On April 13

On this day in ...
... 1987 (25 years ago today), was issued a Joint Declaration by Portugal agreed to transfer to China sovereignty over Macau, in 1999. Negotiations toward this goal had begun in the mid-1970s, after a coup brought to an end a long-standing military dictatorship, and the new government withdrew Portuguese troops from the Asian territory over which Portugal had exerted influence for centuries. Today Macau, which has more than a 1/2 million people in its nearly 30-square-kilometer space off the mainland, is a "special administrative region" of China, enjoying considerable autonomy and its own legal system.
