On this day in ...
... 1945, the Red Army of the Soviet Union approached Berlin from 3 directions, beginning a battle that would cost well over 50,000 lives, drive Nazi leader Adolf Hitler to suicide, and end, in early May (left), with Germany's surrender of the capital.
