On April 23

On this day in ...
... 1522 (490 years ago today), Alessandra Lucrezia Romola de' Ricci was born in Florence, Italy. Placed in a convent school by her father, she rose through the ranks, becoming a "perpetual prioress" of Tuscany's San Vincenzo Dominican order by age 25. An advisor to male clerics (some of whom became popes), an expert administrator, and a devout Catholic in the mystical tradition, she died in 1590 and was canonized, by the name St. Catherine of Ricci (right), in 1746.
